Hello! I'm so happy to show you how to make these super easy Halloween VooDoo Doll Cookies! These are using my tried and true perfect sugar cookie recipe and technique, which makes super soft and yummy cookies that hold their shape during baking. I also made these easier than traditional super cookies by using store bought cookie icing instead of making royal icing, which can get tricky for beginning decorators. Here's what you'll need!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place your butter, sugar, and vanilla into your bowl, and mix on medium until combined.
  2. Add your egg and mix again. Put in your flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Then mix until the dough forms. Spread some extra flour onto your work surface, and grab your cookie cutter. I'm using a gingerbread man, but any person shaped cutter should work.
  4. Working with half your dough at a time, place a ball of it down on your work surface and roll it out to 1/4 inch thickness. Then cut out your dolls.
  5. Place them onto a cookie sheet, and place them in the freezer for 10 minutes. This is my little trick. Placing them in the freezer causes the butter to solidify, which helps the cookies keep their shape while baking and keeps them soft on the inside.
  6. Pop them in your oven, and baking for 9-11 minutes or until they're set on top and lightly browned on the bottom. Let them cool on the sheet for 2 minutes, and then transfer them to cooling racks to cool completely before decorating.
  7. See how soft and flaky the inside is? People are always amazed when they bite into beautifully decorated cookies and they actually taste good too! Now, let's decorate! I used this Wilton cookie icing since it dries down, but you can use any type of icing you would like.
  8. I decorated my voo doo doll cookies in a variety of ways, making sure to add lots of stitches, different sized eyes, and little hearts. If you want to layer colors, make sure to let the icing dry in between.
