I love caterpillars and their whole life cycle is totally fascinating to me. So, when I was a teacher we would spend a lot of time learning about caterpillars, chrysalis, and butterflies. My kids loved reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar book and then making their own pom pom caterpillar craft.

Caterpillar Preschool Craft Project Supplies:
- 1/4 Sheet of green construction paper.
- Googley eyes.
- School glue.
- Pom poms.
- Scissors.
- Optional – single hole punch to add bite holes in the leaf
This project was always a fun one to make to start our butterfly week of learning. It was a great project to make with the little ones after we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar book. We would even have a snack table with some of the food the Very Hungry Caterpillar ate on his journey to become a butterfly. This was a great opportunity to teach the kids about eating healthy foods to help them grow.
Let’s get started! First gather your supplies.
We used 1/4 of a sheet of green paper to make each leaf. I sketched out a rough leaf shape and cut out four at a time. This was super easy and quick. If your crafters are a little older, you could let them cut out their own leaves.

Next, we added glue to the leaves and placed pom poms in an alternating pattern on the leaves. This is a great fine motor skill activity, and it’s good for sequencing skills.
Then, we added a drop of glue to the front pom pom, and placed the eyes on the caterpillar’s head.
If you want to add some paper punch holes to the leaves you can do that too!
