The weather is finally getting nice here in the Pacific Northwest, and that means it’s time for some outdoor crafts. Last week we mixed up this totally easy sidewalk chalk recipe and had some fun in the front yard. We’ll definitely be doing this again!

What You Need to Make Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint
- One part water
- One part corn starch
- Food coloring
For a moment, I almost tried to use corn meal instead of corn starch in our sidewalk paint. Oops!
Mix the water and corn starch in a bowl. Bonus points if you have a chubby baby to help you like I did.
Pour the mixture into a muffin tin or small containers and add food coloring to get the desired colors for your sidewalk chalk paint.

We left one white.
Grab a couple of craft paint brushes, and let the kids go to town with their homemade sidewalk paint.
What I Learned the Hard Way: When it comes to the actual painting, this might be an activity better done in a swimsuit than any other clothing!
I run a dayhome and I am ALWAYS looking for ideas to keep the kids busy but they must be easy and inexpensive.. This was a great idea.
I always give each new idea a trial run. The equal parts cornstarch and water was a bit to runny. The kids had a hard time getting enough out of the container and onto the sidewalk. It took a lot of effort to make the scribble they wanted.
Was it suppose to be this runny? Any suggestions.
Nonetheless, this was MY concern. On behalf of the kidlets, they loved it and the colors have endless possibilities. It dries just like chalk once you finally get enough on the sidewalk. Will try again though.
Thank you!

@DayhomeMom – I found ours to be runnier than I would like, as well. Next time, I think I’ll try adding less water to the mix.
