Supplies:

  • Paper bag
  • Yellow felt
  • Brown construction paper
  • Medium pom poms
  • Googly eyes
  • School or craft glue
  • Scissors

Start by opening up your paper bag. We’re going to roll the top down about half an inch. Paper bags like to buckle when they’re rolled, so you’ll need to straighten it out as you go. Keep rolling the top of the bag down over itself until it’s rolled down to the bottom of the bag.

It should look just like the shape of a bird’s nest! Now because birds typically make their nests out of twigs, we need to make it look like that! Take a sheet of brown construction paper and crumble it up tight. Smooth it out, and crumple it again. Repeat 2 to 3 times until your paper is all wrinkled like this.

Now you’re going to cut the paper into thin strips, and cut or tear those strips into shorter pieces. You just made little twigs for the nest. Go ahead and squeeze some glue all over the edge of your nest.

Let the glue set up for just a minute, and then start sticking the little “twigs” all over the nest! You can tear off little pieces to fill gaps too. Now let the glue dry.

Next you’re going to take a handful of your twigs and crumple them up even more. Set them inside of your nest to make a cozy spot for the baby birds. See how much it looks like a real nest now? Go ahead and cut roughly a 1/4 inch strip off of your yellow felt.

Cut one end off the strip at an angle, and throw away that piece. Now just cut three yellow triangles to make beaks for our baby birds. For each baby bird you’ll need one pom pom, two google eyes, and one beak. Put some glue on the back of the eyes.

And press them onto the bird head. Then just glue on the yellow beak underneath. Go ahead and make all your baby birds. Now all you need to do is let the glue dry, and then set the birds into their new nest!

You’re all done! Don’t they look so cute and comfy in their new home? I hope you have a ton of fun making your own Paper Bag Bird Nest Craft!
