Supplies:

  • Black paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Cotton swabs
  • Orange and white paint
  • Paper plate or paint palette
  • Image of a monarch to draw from

I love crafts that add an artistic element and include drawing. So for this craft we get to start by drawing our own monarch butterfly on black paper. Use pencil because it shows up well and is erasable in case you make a mistake. You can look at an image to base your drawing on too. Just keep your drawing simple, since we’ll be using paint to color our butterfly and be cutting it out later. Put some orange and white paint on your paper plate or palette, and make sure to have a cotton swab for each paint color. Start by getting some orange paint on your swab.

And you can start painting the pretty orange shapes that make up the wings of the butterfly! You can follow your picture closely or be creative. Remember, in nature each butterfly is different, and that’s what makes them beautiful. Don’t forget to add some dots around the ends of the lines.

The edges of monarch wings often have lots of little white dots too, so grab your other bottom swab with white paint and decorate the edges with some cute white polka dots too. If you’d like, you can also go back and do a second layer of orange paint on the wings if it’s too light like mine was.

When you’re happy with how your monarch butterfly looks, go ahead and let the paint dry completely.

You can leave it like this, or go ahead and cut it out like I did!
