DIY Paper Pinwheels Craft

Every year when I was a little girl my mom would get me a new pinwheel for the garden. We would go to the garden shop and buy flowers and a pinwheel. And, as I got older, I learned how to make my own pinwheels. So, when I was a teacher, I would go to the garden center and buy flowers and seeds each spring for our classroom and together we would make DIY Paper Pinwheels.

We also have a printable pinwheels craft if you don’t have patterned paper handy!

Pinwheel Project Supplies:

  • Colored paper – I used 12×12 scrapbook paper.
  • Tape.
  • Brass fasteners.
  • Scissors.
  • Straw.

The most important thing to remember when you are making a pinwheel is to start with a square piece of paper. If you’re using a regular sheet of construction paper, you can fold one corner to the edge of the paper and cut off the excess to make a square.

Let’s get started! First, fold the paper in half diagonally. Repeat this step to make four triangles on the paper.

Now, use your scissors and cut along the fold lines about half way.

Then, place a small piece of tape in the middle of your paper.

Next, fold every other corner to the middle of the paper. You can add tape to hold them together and help keep the paper from tearing too.

Now, use your scissors or a pointy tool (I used a Cricut weeding tool) to poke a small hole through the ends and middle of the paper, as well as one side of the straw.

Then, feed the brass fastener through the holes and spread it out inside of the straw to secure it. I used inexpensive plastic milkshake straws for our pinwheels because of the size of the paper. But, you could use disposable plastic straws too!
