Coconut oil is a really cool substance! Above 76 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s a liquid. Below that, it’s a solid! It’s also great for moisturizing your skin, and is also a great cooking oil. Just don’t use the same jar for cooking and beauty purposes! Coconut oil is what makes these DIY Natural Sugar Scrub Cubes stay solid when they’re stored, and turn into a creamy scrub when they’re used in the shower or bath. They’re also a super safe beauty product for families with young kids or pets, because all the ingredients are edible!

Supplies:

  • Coconut Oil.
  • Sugar.
  • Food dye. I used gel icing colors, but liquid dye (like for Easter Eggs) works best.
  • Glass measuring cup. Or any microwave safe container for mixing and pouring.
  • Toothpicks (if using gel colors)
  • Square container to set mixture in (for a rustic look) or a silicone candy mold (for a clean finish or fancy shapes)
  • Knife. If making rustic looking cubes.
  • Mixing spatula or spoon.

Start by scooping a good amount of coconut oil into a glass measuring cup. I used about 1 1/2 cups of solid coconut oil to make 3/4 cup once it’s melted. To melt it, pop it in the microwave for 30 second intervals. It should take about a minute and a half to melt completely. Make sure it’s just melted, but not hot. If the oil gets hot, the sugar will melt in the next steps.

Once it’s melted, add a couple drops of your food coloring. All I had on hand were gel food colors, so they behaved slightly odd in the oil, but added a really pretty speckled look to the final product. For a cleaner finished color, use standard liquid food dye, like the kind used for Easter Eggs.

Toss in your sugar! I ended up using about 2 cups. I added a little bit at a time and kept mixing until I had a texture that was similar to an extra thick slushee. As you mix, the food coloring will mix in too.

If you’re going for a rustic look, like the soap bars at Lush, just pour it into a square or rectangular container. I recommend plastic just so it’s a bit flexible. If you want a “pretty” finish or a certain shape, you can also pour the mixture into silicone candy molds.

Put it in the fridge for several hours, or the freezer if you’re in a hurry, and let it set up completely.

Now that it’s set, bring out your mold and let it come to room temp, especially if you had it in the freezer. Gently loosen the edges of the mold, and flip it upside down. Tap it gently on the counter and your sugar scrub should pop right out.

It might have separated a bit if your oil to sugar ratio was off, but I like how it looks that way! It might also have a pretty speckled look. That’s part of the fun in making your own products, they always turn out unique.

If you used a mold, you’re all done! If you’re doing the rustic cubed look, take a sharp knife (if you’re having a child do this, make sure an adult does this part!) and run it under very hot water to warm it up. Cut your brick into little cubes!

If you keep your house cool, you can store these in a cabinet or cool area of your bathroom. If you live in a hot climate or keep your house warmer, just pop these in some snack bags and store them in your fridge. And don’t worry if someone accidentally takes a bite out of one, because everything is edible!
