Hello! I don’t know about where you live, but school is back in session where I am and the teachers have the cutest classrooms this year! I love that teachers put such time and effort into creating such comfortable learning environments for our children. Today I’m sharing this super inexpensive and cute DIY Hall Pass Craft for Teachers that can be personalized with your school colors! You can also use short strings to hold the passes like I did, or you can use stretchy wrist cords or even lanyards! Let’s get started!
DIY Hall Pass Craft for Teachers
Supplies:
- White and black paint.
- Paint in two or more of your theme or school colors.
- Wood pieces. One large one for the base, and as many small ones as you need passes. I found these for around .80 cents a piece in the wood section of the craft store. If your small pieces don’t have holes already, you can use a drill to make simple holes.
- Small command hooks. You can also use clothespins.
- Twine, stretchy cord, or lanyards.
- Hot glue gun
- Foam or standard paint brushes – medium and tiny.
- Foam dot stamper in two sizes. You can also freehand the dots.
- Pencil.
- Scissors.
- Black permanent marker.
Start by painting all your piece with your base color. I chose white, and did 3 coats on the front and sides of the wood. Let them dry throughly. Tip: Use paint bottles to hold the small piece while they dry! Next take your school or theme colors (I used pink and blue) and squeeze a bit out onto a paint palette or a paper plate. You can even use wax or freezer paper as a palette. I love using things around the house for multiple purposes.

Take your large dot stamper and your first color, and randomly press dots onto your pieces. The dot stampers leave bubbles behind, so if that bothers you you can smooth them out with a brush. I love the cute texture though! Let the dots dry.
Now go in with your smaller dot stamper and your second color, and add in small dots in the blank spaces. Let the pieces dry now for at least an hour.
Take all your pieces, and line your passes up where you want them to land your your main piece. Then take your mini command hooks or clothespins, and line them up on the main piece directly over the smaller piece holes. Then use your pencil and make a little mark so you know where to glue them down.
Place a small amount of hot glue on your hooks, and attach them to your main piece.

Now let’s make some strings to hang the passes. You can also use stretchy wrist cords or lanyards, whatever works best for your students. Measure how long you want them to be, hold the two ends together, and tie them into a knot. Tip: measure and cut one string, and measure the rest of your strings off of that one. Now take the string loop, and thread it through the back of the pass to the front like shown.
Pull the loop up, and the knot end down over it. Then pull the loop straight up and it will knot itself around the hole in your pass! Hang it on your hook, and make them for all the passes.
Now take your pencil and write the words you want! If you’re not sure of your handwriting, you can place down stickers and trace them or use a stencil. I kept it simple and my main piece says HALL PASS, and the passes say BOYS, GIRLS, OFFICE, and LIBRARY. On the main piece, use a tiny paintbrush and black paint to trace over the words.
For the passes, use a permanent marker to trace over the pencil. You can use sticky tack, command strips, or even magnets to attach your main piece to the wall, and you’re all done!
Some other ideas are to add your name and room number on the back, or add an image of your school mascot. I hope you enjoyed making this DIY Hall Pass Craft for Teachers with me! For another fun back to school craft, check out my Personalized Back to School Pencils!“
