DIY Fingerprint Heart Key Ring

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, and I am helping my niece and nephew make their mom a meaningful and heartfelt Mother’s Day gift. I know I cherished my own boys’ handmade Mother’s Day gifts. In fact, I have saved every one I was given. Since my sister recently got a new car, my niece wanted to make her a key ring. After a little thought and some work, we decided to make a DIY Fingerprint Heart Key Ring. It doesn’t take too long to make or even cost too much, but, it’s a sweet gift my sister will have for years to come.

Make these cute Mother’s Day buttons for mom, too!

Supplies:

  • Oven Bake Clay.
  • Foil.
  • Circle Cookie Cutter.
  • Paint and paint brush.
  • Access to an oven.

This is not one of my typical projects. But, it is inexpensive and easy to make with older kids and access to an oven. If you are making this project with a class, you could bake them at home in the evening and bring them back to school the next day to be painted.

Oven Bake Clay is packaged as a block of clay with lines in it. It is almost perforated to make it easier to break off small pieces to use. I used one and a half sections of Oven Bake Clay for this key ring and it was perfect. One block would make at least five key rings.

Break off one and a half sections of clay, and knead it in your hands. My niece loved doing this. Form the clay into a circle shape. Then, use the cookie cutter to make a perfect circle.

Next, help your little one make a heart shape indent in the circle with their fingers.

Then, add a small hole with a toothpick or pencil in the clay. This will be the hole for a key ring.

Now, place the clay on a piece of foil and bake according to package directions.

Once the clay is cool, fill the heart shaped dent in the circle with paint and allow to dry.
