DIY Earring Stand for Teens to Make

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to show you how to make this easy DIY earring stand from things you already have around the house! You know that upcycling old things is one of my favorite things to do, and now is the perfect time to dig around your garage and closets and see what you can make over into something new!

Here’s what you’ll need to get started! Remember you don’t have to have everything I do. Use what you can find around your home!

Supplies:

  • A blank CD or one you don’t want anymore
  • An empty vitamin bottle or other tall, thin container
  • A water or soda bottle cap
  • A decorative topper like a mini building or even a tiny toy
  • Drill with a 5/64 drill bit
  • Wood block or other surface to drill on (it will get damaged!)
  • Sharpie marker
  • Hot glue gun or other strong glue
  • Rubbing alcohol and paper towel for cleaning
  • Paint brush
  • Paint. I used gesso and acrylic for a “vintage” look. Use spray paint for a smoother finish.

Start by marking holes around the edge of your cd with a marker. You want them fairly close to the edge and about a thumb-width apart. Set your cd on your wooden block, and use your drill to very slowly drill through the cd. Reverse the drill to remove it. You’ll have some light marking from where the layers of the cd separate as you drill. The slower and more carefully you drill, the less this will happen. Also, it will be covered when we paint.

Get your drilled cd, the vitamin bottle (no top needed) and your bottle cap.

Use your rubbing alcohol and the paper towel to clean all of your items so they’re free of any oils or sticky bits. Now we’re going to start assembling. Place a bead of glue around the top edge of your bottle, and press it down onto the center of your cd. If you’re using hot glue, it likes to peel off of plastic, so I add an extra layer around the edges to help secure it better. This isn’t necessary if you’re using something like E6000 or a strong craft glue.

Apply more glue around the edge of your bottle cap, and glue it onto the top center of your cd, covering the hole. Let the glue dry if needed.

Now I was going for a vintage French country feel, so I primed my whole piece with gesso to add texture.

Note: if your drilled holes tend to get filled with paint, use a pin or a paper clip to clean the glue out before it dries!

I let it dry completely and then added two coats of light teal acrylic paint. If you want a smoother finish, go right in with your acrylic paint, or use spray paint instead. When all your paint is dry and you’re happy with how it looks, add some glue to the bottom of your decorative piece and add it to the top of your bottle cap.

Now all you need to do is add your jewelry, and enjoy your new diy earring stand! The great thing is that you can set stud earrings on top, and even use your decorative piece on top as a ring holder! I hope you have fun making this and adding a new decorative piece to your room!
